The leading cause of death in Thailand is HIV/AIDS. One in every 100 people of the 63.6 million living in the country is infected with HIV. There are very few countries worldwide where public policy has been effective in preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS on a national scale, but Thailand is an exception. Since the first case of AIDS was reported in 1984, programs have been on the rise to prevent the spread of HIV, increase condom usage, decrease STD (Sexually Transmitted Diseases), and decrease new HIV infections. The numerous prevention programs have helped reduce the number of new HIV infections from 143,000 in 1991 to 29,000 in 2001. These programs must continue to help control the spread of the virus and ensure the success of past efforts. Population Services International (PSI), a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health of low-income people, made the focus of their social marketing program on HIV/AIDS in Thailand. This website focuses on their "One" condom brand campaign.
