In
less than three years, the rate of HIV infection rates skyrocketed from
5% to 11.8% of in the West African nation of Cameroon. For a country with
a population of about 16 million, this means that approximately 1.9 million
people in this one country alone are infected with the deadly virus. Even
more startling is that the highest rates of infection lie among the youth
in Cameroon. In a study performed by the German technical assistance agency
(GTZ), 2/3 of teens in Cameroon are sexually active by the age of 16,
and more than half rebuff the use of condoms - despite the alarming prevalence
of AIDS. |
